Student Clubs – Getting Involved at Queen’s

By: Richard, blog writer, photographer and current student from Panama

While learning English at Queen’s School of English (QSoE), we have many opportunities to join different clubs that are offered at Queen’s University through AMS (Alma Mater Society, one of the oldest university student governments in Canada). Joining these clubs is a great way for international students to practice English and to make Canadian friends.

One of my classmates at QSoE, Shoko Kaneda, from Japan, is  excellent example!  She is an exchange student from K.G.U. (Kwansei Gakuin University) who is taking an English program at QSoE before continuing her studies in Sociology back at home. Travelling to Canada has been very exciting for her; she has been able to experience the culture and enjoy her stay. One of her favourite hobbies is playing Frisbee, a sport that she has been playing for one year. Shoko joined the Frisbee club at Queen’s University and has enjoyed playing for the team. Playing Frisbee with Canadian students, she explained, has been a challenge and the most exciting thing she has done while visiting Canada. Shoko said the Frisbee club has given her the opportunity to get involved with native speakers, which has helped her to improve her English skills and taught her how to be a collective and cooperative person.
